Typical interior paint coverage
Many interior wall paints advertise roughly 10–12 m² per litre per coat, but products vary. Use the exact stated coverage on your tin whenever possible.
The formula
Paint litres = paintable area × number of coats ÷ coverage (m²/L). Add an appropriate extra allowance to account for waste and touch-ups.
What affects how far paint goes?
Porous new plaster, textured surfaces, colour changes, application methods and over-thinning can all influence actual usage. Primer or specialist paint may be needed.
How much extra should I buy?
Our calculator adds 10% as a planning allowance. This is a practical starting point rather than a promise that the amount will be sufficient for every project.
Example: 30 m² of walls
For 30 m², two coats and coverage of 12 m²/L: 30 × 2 ÷ 12 = 5 litres. Add 10% and the estimate is 5.5 litres.
Frequently asked questions
Does 1 litre cover 12 m² with two coats?
If the label says 12 m²/L per coat, covering the same area twice takes roughly twice as much paint.
How accurate is an online paint calculator?
It provides a planning estimate. Your real result depends on measurements, the product and the condition of the surface.
These calculations are estimates. Always follow the product’s coverage, preparation and application instructions.
